Overview
Mercenary is the close-range pressure option: Sword & Shield can answer enemy momentum with blocking and parries, while Hammer brings broad attacks and interruption pressure. The official DevNote frames both as weapon branches of one class; the Xbox overview provides the wider tactical PvPvE setting.

How to Play Mercenary
Stay close enough to contest space, then select the weapon branch that answers the moment. Sword & Shield rewards defensive timing and follow-up pressure; Hammer trades on presence at close range. In a team of up to three, use that pressure to create openings rather than assuming a guaranteed matchup advantage.
Weapon Paths
Sword Build emphasizes slashes and lunges, with the DevNote describing damage boosts and stacking slashes during Crimson Blade. Shield Build centers on blocking and Perfect Parries, then uses Shield Dash to continue pursuit and suppression.
Charged Hammer keeps mobility, Super Armor, and damage resistance during its wind-up according to the DevNote, pairing wide attacks with interruption. Stun Hammer stacks debuffs through hammer strikes to trigger stun control, with Hammer Spin supplying frequent close-range pressure.
Strengths
- Two official weapon branches offer either guarded control or imposing Hammer pressure.
- Sword & Shield has a clear defensive response through blocking and Perfect Parries.
- Hammer paths bring interruption or stun-control language directly described in the DevNote.
Weaknesses
- Mercenary operates at melee range, so it must earn contact before its pressure matters.
- The DevNote’s defensive and charged mechanics make timing and commitment important.
- Community Insight: the A tier is a DevNote #6-context editorial interpretation, not an official balance ranking.
Team Pairings
The Xbox overview says hunters can form teams of up to three and use class combinations for surprising combos. Mercenary’s guard or interruption tools can make room for a teammate’s follow-up; treat that as a coordination idea, not a promise of a fixed best pairing.
Community Build Directions
Community Insight — DevNote #6-context editorial interpretation: start with Shield Build when learning defensive timing, choose Sword Build for direct pursuit-oriented pressure, and consider Charged or Stun Hammer when the team needs a more forceful close-range presence. These are editorial directions, not official loadout prescriptions.
